First, read the Newsela article Scientists eager to see close-ups of Ceres, a Texas-sized dwarf planet Opens a new window.

As you read the article, think about the central idea and key details of the article. Make sure to notice the title of the article and think about whether or not it reflects the central idea. All of this thinking will help you to compare and contrast the text to the videos later in this module.

After you have read the article, complete the activity below.

Now, view video clip #1 "Dawn Ceres Arrival" from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Mission controllers are monitoring the movements of the Dawn spacecraft, which is in orbit around the dwarf planet Ceres, taking pictures and gathering data. The clip is taken from a briefing to the news media.

As you watch, think about the similarities and differences between the information presented in the video and that presented in the text.

Ask yourself:

  • What is the central idea in the video?
  • How is the central idea in the video the same as the text? How does the video confirm what you learned in the text?
  • How is it different? Are there any contradictions in the video? Is there information that is evident in the video but not in the text?
