A well-written explanation includes a claim(s), evidence and reasoning. When you write an explanation, you want readers to understand and accept your ideas. Organizing your ideas using claims, evidence and reasoning will help you to communicate with clarity so that the reader will understand your purpose for writing.

In this module, you will learn to identify claims and how evidence and reasoning support claims in a text.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Identify claims in a text.
  • Identify evidence that supports a particular claim.
  • Identify and use reasoning that explains why evidence supports a particular claim.
