Claim:

A statement that takes a position on a particular issue by answering a question or addressing a problem.

Desalination:

The process of removing salt from ocean water so that the water can be used.

Explicit:

Claim directly stated.

Implicit:

Claim NOT directly stated. Reader must infer by examining the evidence and reasoning presented.

Reverse-osmosis desalination:

The process of removing salt from water by running the water through a membrane, or a thin-layer such as a net.

Semipermeable:

Allowing some molecules, mostly small, to pass through but preventing other, mostly larger, particles from passing through.
